Macroscopic charcoal was used to analyze the occurrence of palaeo-wildfire occurrences in the Paraná Basin Upper Paleozoic under a palaeobotanic perspective. This type of record is the product of vegetation fires, being abundant in sedimentary rocks from different environments. These fossil records provide a unique opportunity to understand the evolutionary history and diversity of life in the past, using the data produced by the identification of plant groups involved in such events and recorded, in the present case, in Permian outcrops. Although, the Permian lower limit of macroscopic charcoal occurrences associated with sediments have not been clearly determined. So, the present work aims to confirm the occurrence of palaeo-wildfires in the Curva do Belvedere Outcrop, a Permian exposition of the Paraná Basin, located at the Encruzilhada do Sul municipality, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. Also the identification of palaeobotanical groups which occurred at the outcrop and a detailed stratigraphic profiling from the exposed levels, are aimed. The data analysis was performed using a stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscope (JEOL JSM 6360), in the standard methodology for the preparation of samples of this type. It was possible to confirm the occurrence of macroscopic charcoals and, consequently, palaeo-wildfires in both clastic levels and coal beds. The records are probably associated with woody gymnosperm and were possibly not transported, making it possible to suggest the occurrence of relatively complex plant communities, able to withstand fires, in the Curva do Belvedere Outcrop during the Lower Permian.
