A pesquisa teve caráter aplicado.
1990s, in Brazil, there have been significant changes in milk production, with prices varying freely. This has led to the need to restructure this chain, due to market competition, more intense and detailed control of related activities, and the use of new rules for product and process quality in the economic, social and environmental aspects. However, these new standards are not always adopted / understood by small producers, responsible for this important link in the chain. This study aimed to verify the potentialities, the difficulties and the way the family farms that produce milk are organized in the Southern Cone-RO regions considering the social, economic and environmental aspects. From the use of a sustainability assessment system, through its own validated methodological procedures, through the use of 23 specific indicators and parameters, we sought to characterize the 36 properties regarding the environmental, social and economic aspects in the localities Cerejeiras, Cabixi, Colorado, Vilhena, Chupinguaia, Curumbiara and Pimenteiras. The research had applied character. Regarding the objectives, it is descriptive; As for the means, field, case study, using a comparative method, quantitative approach. The estimated sustainability index for the Southern Cone was 0.64, considered regular according to the methodology employed. Regarding the average environmental sustainability, the waste, legal reserve and land use parameters were evaluated as poor, the water parameter as regular, and all other parameters were considered excellent. Regarding the average social sustainability, the domain social relations was excellent, while all other domains were considered good. And, in relation to the average economic sustainability, the parameters patrimonial evolution and basic services were considered bad, the parameters technological evolution, enterprise management and family succession were evaluated as regular, and the other parameters were classified as good, with no inappropriate parameter, or excellent.
