Effluents from tanneries have a high polluting load, usually containing substances capable of causing significant changes in the dynamics of small mammal populations, as well as drastic changes in the health of humans that may have contact with this type of waste. Despite restrict legislation, discharges of inadequate standards into water bodies are often discarded. It has recently been shown that contact with tannery effluents in a concentration greater than 5% causes testicular degeneration in rats. These data are an important indicator of the reproductive toxicity of this contaminant, however it is important to define whether even lower concentrations closer to environmental reality have the same effect. Thus, this dissertation aimed to evaluate the toxicological effects on the reproductive system of male mice chronic (30 days) exposed to this type of effluent. For this, 40 (fourteen) Balb / c mice were distributed in 04 (four) experimental groups according to the degree of drinking water contamination, namely: 0% (control), 0.1%, 0.5% and 5% Exposure to different effluent concentrations occurred for 30 (thirty) days. After this period, males were paired with females to evaluate fertility parameters. They were then euthanized for morphological, cellular and molecular evaluations in reproductive tissues. For this, seminal quality parameters were evaluated. Regarding the physicochemical parameters evaluated in the effluent, it was evident the high concentrations of total chromium, endocrine disruptor with potential to cause health damage. The data show that males exposed to 0.5% and 5% of the effluent had morphological changes in spermetazoids, presenting mainly head defects. Males in the 5% group had a significant increase in body mass. Females paired with males of the respective groups showed significant reduction in placental weight. Thus, this research demonstrates that even at low concentrations exposure to tannery effluents can have negative effects on the reproductive system of male mice. This allows us to understand how much this type of effluent can negatively impact an entire mammalian population that depends on contaminated bodies of water.
